- Choose the size–quality balance
- Use 64 kbps for compact speech files or up to 320 kbps for a higher bitrate. You choose the trade-off.

File extensions describe containers, not every codec inside them. Some files may not decode. Only the first audio track is converted; cover artwork and video are excluded.
Which MP3 bitrate should you choose?
Start with 192 kbps in the Free MP3 Converter for a balance of size and sound. 64 kbps suits speech when a small file matters most; 128 kbps keeps everyday recordings compact. 256 and 320 kbps allow a higher bitrate for music. MP3 uses lossy compression: converting from WAV or FLAC discards some detail, and re-encoding an MP3 can reduce quality again. A higher setting does not improve a low-quality source.
